Modesty Doesn’t Have to be Retro, Vintage or Antique
I’ve grown up during a time when less was thought best by the main stream, when bathing suits resembled dental floss.
Today, I have a little one who is quickly approaching puberty. I want her to value herself, to be a woman of virtue, respectable and responsible. And it starts with me.
I have to admit, I like things that cling or that reveal. Even though I’d never wear them because of my core values believing it wrong to bare my flesh to anyone other than my husband. Still…there is something in most of us human beings that find beauty in the human body…particularly the bodies that have been kept in good condition.
When I see cute little shirts that are made of little fabric, I think they’re very cute or pretty, but I also know they are far too revealing…and now I’ve found the solution!
Repurpose, Recycle, Reuse
We’re into recycling and re-purposing everything, right? Why not sports bras? Yep, you heard me right. Sports bras.
They go GREAT under tops that would otherwise be super revealing. I just put one on and wear whatever I want. Doesn’t matter if the top is made strapless, spaghetti strapped, low cut. No worries. Just put on a well-fitting sports bra first, in a color that compliments the top, and voila! Modesty all in one without losing out on the cuteness of the latest fashions.
What About Little Ones?
It’s true, little ones rarely have sports bras available in their size. However, there are alternatives for little ones, too. I’ve raised my precious gift from God with being aware of modesty and how tops can gape.
I’ve also raised her wearing “modesty shirts”, which are tops that are either high cut just below the neck but are sleeveless or spaghetti strapped so it can go under other things that would otherwise gape, or they have straps that can be shortened so that they BECOME high cut just below the neck.
We benefit from being taught that our bodies (between just above the knees and to the armpits) is our wedding gift to our spouse, and that our spouse wouldn’t want a used wedding gift anymore than we would?
Is this standard difficult to live up to and even more difficult to find in someone else. Yes. Is it worth it? Indeed it is. And it all begins with teaching modesty early in life, and the reasons for it: God, God-given self-worth, and safety.
Another modesty tip for girls AND women is to wear leggings (long or to the knee) under dresses and skirts and shorts that gape or are shorter than just above the knee. This keeps eyes from wondering, and dirty minds from imagining. It also protects from wind gusts revealing more than what is proper.
What About Men and Modesty?
Men are unfortunately raised by society to devalue modesty. They have urinals afterall. But modesty does apply to men as well.
The most attractive man may look gorgeous without a shirt BUT that doesn’t mean he should run around baring his skin to people other than his wife. Nor should he wear very revealing body-hugging swimwear or pants, or pants that sag way down under his backside or underwear. Old fashioned? Yep! And old fashioned values are good, healthy, and beneficial.
Modesty Trends
As time goes on, trends cycle around. Sadly, modesty comes and goes when modesty should always be trendy.
Will you join me in reviving modesty, beginning with ourselves to model modesty to our kids, and then teaching our kids to be modest? (Men, this includes you with your sons. It’s not sissy to use a stall or cover up.) 🙂
Self-respect and self-worth is so important. Being responsible includes how we dress.
Be fashionable. Be modest. AND…Have fun. 🙂
Amen! Oh, yes! God bless you! 😇👍🏻
